Located in McCarthy, McCarthy Lodge Resort is in the entertainment district and in the mountains. McCarthy Footbridge is a notable landmark, and the area's natural beauty can be seen at McCarthy Creek and McCarthy Road Information Station. Wrangell - St. Elias National Park and Preserve and Kennecott Visitor Center are two other places to visit that come recommended. Enjoy the great outdoors with mountain climbing and rock climbing, or hop on a bike rental nearby and explore all the area has to offer. Along with 3 restaurants, this smoke-free resort has a bar/lounge and 2 coffee shops/cafes. Free breakfast (local cuisine), free WiFi in public areas, and a free area shuttle are also provided. Additionally, concierge services, a library, and express check-out are onsite. Change of towels is available on request. McCarthy Lodge Resort offers 20 accommodations with blackout drapes/curtains. Each accommodation is individually furnished and decorated. Bathrooms include bathrobes, slippers, and designer toiletries. Housekeeping is offered daily and change of towels can be requested. The recreational activities listed below are available either on site or nearby; fees may apply. The property is closed between September 16 and May 14.

The room and beds are clean, we stayed in this hostel style place but had the room to ourselves(2 beds), other guests are all respectful and quiet. Bed was nice and cozy. People are all friendly here, remind me of the good old days~

Location is wonderful! It is a unique property, just ask a few questions before booking about location and shared bathroom situation. Stay in the main hotel building unless you want to go outside and down steps to use the bathroom. Overall - location and staff were very good. Would stay there again - just in the main building.

Awful

Less than 1 star.
Horrible stay. 6sqm room. No heating in the rooms—it was 43°F—and it was impossible to lock the door from either the inside or the outside. There was no information indicating where to park or that a shuttle was required. The hotel is a 20-minute walk (uphill) from the parking lot. Common areas, toilets, and showers were dirty; we couldn't even wash up. Breakfast was very mediocre. A rip-off at $250.
Fortunately, the staff was friendly.

Sleepless in McCarthy

Our stay at Ma Johnson's Hotel was unfortunately one of the worst lodging experiences we've had. We were assigned Room 112, which had a loud mechanical vibration coming from inside the wall that lasted approximately 15–20 seconds and repeated every 1–2 minutes throughout the night. This was not street noise or noise from other guests—it was clearly a building mechanical issue, and it made sleeping virtually impossible.
When we went to the front desk the next morning to explain the problem, another guest happened to walk by. Upon hearing us mention "Room 112," she immediately said, "I moved out." That unsolicited comment strongly suggested that the issue was known previously. When we later questioned Morgan at the front desk further, she acknowledged that she was aware there had been a problem with Room 112.
We asked to be moved to another room or, if that wasn't possible, for some reasonable accommodation. We were told there were no other rooms available. Morgan showed little interest in finding a solution or making things right. No refund, discount, or other accommodation was offered despite the fact that the room was effectively unusable for sleeping.
Because we simply could not spend another night in the room, we were forced to find other lodging at our own expense. American Express is currently assisting us in obtaining a refund for two of the three nights we were unable to use. In our opinion, a full refund would have been the appropriate resolution, particularly since the issue with Room 112 was acknowledged after we raised our concerns.
McCarthy and Kennicott are extraordinary destinations and absolutely worth visiting. Unfortunately, our experience at Ma Johnson's was overshadowed by a preventable maintenance issue and an equally disappointing response from management. If a room has a known mechanical defect that prevents guests from sleeping, it should either be repaired before being rented or guests should be informed in advance and offered an alternative. Until the mechanical problem in Room 112 is permanently corrected and customer service improves when legitimate concerns are raised, I cannot recommend staying here.

It was a great room. Great food and entertainment. Shuttles were great and helpful too get you to where you want to go.
