Beautiful nature and interesting military history
Most of the island is a WWI fort turned into museum but there is beautiful nature and great opportunity to go swimming. Made a mistake and booked two room but the great staff helped me to get my money back. Less than two hours from Stockholm by boat.

Excited environment, but a day trip is enough
The positive first: The big family who run the place are nice and extremely dog friendly. Good breakfast included. The island has an exciting environment, and there are great places for a picnic and a swim.
Then the more boring part: We stayed one night in the big house, and we will probably not come back or recommend a stay for others. A day trip is enough. This is not really a hostel or guest house, but a tavern that also happens to have rooms for rent. There is not much public space besides the restaurant, the rooms are spartan and small, and it is very responsive, which is a bit unfortunate as the family room is just above the bar. The restaurant is ok for dinner, but there are no simpler options for lunch, and the focus is more on aperol than coffee.

Evening sun
The hostel is really nice. Nice staff, good food. Clean toilets and shower. Rooms are a bit responsive. A tip to the owners is that you have staff accommodation a bit away from the guests when we heard everything. It sounded several times in the "bedchamber" and it was "argued" occasionally. The family who now run the hostel have it as their "Living Room" with the whole family and friends. I think you have to separate business and family, a little more professionally.
The surroundings are really nice, a bit messy around one of the houses.
The fort ok to visit, 90 SEK per adult. One overnight stay is enough. Many came by boat and had lunch or dinner, nice.

Fall in love with Stockholm's archipelago
If you're looking for a cheap, hassle free way to truly experience Stockholm's beautiful archipelago, then spending a night, or even just a day, at Siaröfortet is the way to go. Located a mere two hour boat ride from the city center the small island boast beautiful vistas, a quaint atmosphere and plenty of opportunities for swimming and basking in the sun. The island's inn is clean, charmingly rustik, easy on the wallet, has good food and a very friendly staff. The main attraction is of course Siaröfortet itself, an old millitary stronghold dating back to the 1920s. You can explore the fortress on your own or take part in the guided tour given once a day.

Warning!
We booked a 4 day package arranged by Blidösundsbolaget via Siaröfortet last summer, 2013. Things can always go wrong, and they did - big time! - it's how a company handles the problem that is the key.
The entire story is way too long but when we had enough and ended the trip, one day early, they were very understanding at Siaröfortet and we were promised, on the spot, that we would get a full refund. Nothing happened however but after a couple of calls we were finally told that we would still get a full refund but as they needed to convince one boss, who didn't think we should get the refund, they would start by refunding one third of the promised refund, and after a reminder we received a quarter of the refund. That was the last we heard...
We're approaching summer again and let's just say that the group we intended to take on the same trip this upcoming summer will be doing something else...
