Failed to meet my already low expectations! You definitely don’t want to go here on a vacation!

I only live 20 miles away, but my girlfriend and I wanted to go down to OOB for the weekend to go to the new comedy club as well as watch some live music at The Brunswick patio bar on the beach without worrying about driving home after drinking.
Fully aware from past experiences that just about all of the motels down on the beach itself are decades outdated, trashy and super worn out, not worth what the cost, we didn’t want to spend $300+ per night for a really bad motel room locally.
We found this old motel about ten minutes from the beach on US Route 1 in Saco. I would usually never stay in a roadside motel or Motor Lodge 2 star type places, but it was only $100 a night and I’d-seen how they had gutted the building and supposedly renovated just a couple years ago while passing by on the road. Their website markets it as “newly renovated”
So against my better judgment we took a gamble and booked two weekend nights here.
This place is old. It’s currently up for sale and according to the real estate listing the building itself was constructed in 1955. It’s right off the highway next to a rundown flea market and abandoned house with weeds and trees growing through the windows. There are also two abandoned broken down cars in the parking lot that have appeared to been there for a very long time.
Arrived to check-in the little office out front and there was a friendly enough younger ethnic guy behind the counter. The same ethnicity that has a stereotypical reputation for not using deodorant. As soon as I walked in the door I was greeted by the most outrageous smell of sweat and B.O. and the smell literally filled the whole office, but he got us checked in. His English wasn’t very good. My girlfriend had gone back out the door immediately, and I thought she had gone back in the car, but she told me she was trying to get away from the smell!
We booked a single queen room directly through the motel’s website, but he told us there was none available and gave us two singles. We accepted it and went up to our room. To access the room we were given an old-school real metal key! I haven’t seen seen a physical key for a hotel or motel room since the mid-1980s when I was a kid on vacation with parents.
We were greeted by a musty room covered by some kind of overpowering sicklysweet smelling air freshener. There was also a slight urine like smell intermitently coming out of the bathroom area. The toilet itself was clean, so I’m not sure if it was coming out of the pipes or maybe back splatter around the toilet? Regardless, the room was pretty dirty with smeared and dinged up doors, stains on the carpet, hair on the wall and even on the door going into the bathroom. Also, some kind of unidentifiable stain on one of the bed covers.
I then checked the booking receipt he gave me and realized he’d only checked me in and billed me for one night, even though I’d paid for two nights.
Went back down to the office and turns out that even though I had told him my name and given him my ID to photocopy, he still mixed up my reservation for a somebody with a completely different name. He apologized and told us he did have our single queen room and that we could change right out. We had already logged all of our stuff out of the car up to the room on the second floor, so we emptied it all back out and had to drive around the other side of the building and carry it back up to a second room.
This room smelled a little bit better, but wasn’t in much better condition. It also had the weird sickly sweet air-freshner smell. Very rustic. Complete with cobwebs on the corner of ceiling,
The only renovations noticeable were new wooden railings and stairs to the rooms, a flower garden out byte road, new bathroom sink fixture, sort of new flatscreen Roku T.V., new mini-fridge, freshly painted walls and ceilings. Looks like the carpet might’ve been new a few years ago, but it was already pretty stained up. However, walking on it with white socks they didn’t turn completely black so it could’ve been dirtier. I’ve stayed in rooms at motels and order Virginia Beach, where your socks were literally black after walking on the carpet a few minutes..
No telephone in the room to connect you to anybody who works there. Only 1/4 of a roll of toilet paper in the room. (Discovered at 2am in the morning) complete with the toilet leaking brown fluid from the base where it connects to the floor. Lots of yucky brown caulking, around the base of the toilet, too. Also rust stains around the bathroom tub and some brown mold on the shower caulking. No deadbolt on the room door. Just a cheap doorknob lock and flimsy door that could easily be kicked in. Real security issues, especially as nobody’s on site after business hours. I didn’t feel particularly secure leaving my valuables in the room while we were out..
The only redeeming quality to the room was the bed which was an exceptionally comfortable mattress! I slept better than at the luxury Marriott suite I recently stayed in Thailand. I didn’t dare look under the actual mattress at this point. Pillows completely worn out, but we brought our own bedding.
The smell dissipated a bit by the end of the second day after we’d been in there running the air conditioner and vent in the shower all day, but there was still a slightly unappealing smell of musk and sicky sweet air freshener.
i didn’t have high expectations to begin with, but this place completely failed even my lowest expectations for a low budget motel/Motor Lodge type place. Probably among one of the worst places I’ve ever stayed? Had I paid more than $100 per night I probably would’ve just checked out as soon as we arrived, but we were only there to sleep so we dealt with it.
As a local, my best advice for a hotel in the Old Beach area would actually be an Air BnB or vacation rental, or one of the economy chain hotels in Saco, Biddeford, or Scarborough. (Got to go to Portland if you want a nicer hotel at 3.5 star level or higher) While they’re not very fancy they are better than most all of the motels on the beach itself. We’ve stated about five of them and every single one of them were completely dreadful. Especially for the prices charged in summer. Just not worth it. No idea why none of the two or three dozen motels down there can’t truly renovate into a nice place and then charge a premium for it because the OOB area really needs nicer lodging options.
