Not much to do in the city itself, but serves as a gateway to the northern border with Nicaragua and also as a main point for volcano tours to Rincon de la Vieja.
Just flew into the airport and didn't really have time to take a look around the town.
Capital city in Guanacaste, the northernmost province. This is an ideal spot for someone who wants affordable living, acces to the airport, Nicaragua to the north, and many surrounding beaches. It's also close to Arenal, a local volcano in the jungle.. A really great place for activities like zip lining and volcanic springs. There were many businesses and a college nearby, but overall this was not the quiet, serene beach towns you picture when you imagine costa rica.
I love Liberia for many reasons...it is historical, the people are friendly and warm, and I feel like it is unique from the rest of Costa Rica. While many cities are now overrun with tourists and non-native people, I think that Liberia has maintained it's sense of Costa Rican culture and customs. I was in Liberia to study Spanish and I found a real gem of a school called Instituto Estelar Bilingue, in the center of the city. The school helped me learn Spanish fast and showed me the true beauty that surrounds Liberia. You literally can drive one hour in any direction and end up at a volcano, a national park, a waterfall, or another country (Nicaragua). I loved Liberia and I can't wait to go back
