Historic colonial city on the northwest coast of Luzon Philippines. Signs of Spanish colonial influence but also Chinese influence because of the long trading ties with China. Atmospheric streets of cobble stones and old decaying buildings create a particular mood in Vigan. Lacks the really noisy traffic of other Philippine city. I like the fact that for the most part, Vigan is still a "real" city and hasn't been taken over by tourism. Great way to tour the city is on the back of horse carriage.
Vigan City is the capital city of Ilocos Sur and the seat of the provincial government. The city is located on the western coast of the large island of Luzon and is facing the South China Sea and is 408 kilometers northwest of Manila. The name Vigan came from the Ilocano word "kabiga-an" pertaining to the plant "biga" which is a tuberous plant that once grew along the banks of its rivers.
